I.  SUMMARY

The Ground Service Representative is responsible for the day-to-day operations on the ground pertaining to the aircraft such as service and the supervision of many outside vendors. 

II.  ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Preparing the aircraft (cleaning, dressing and serving lavatories) so it is ready for the next flight. 
• Preloading (determining payload and ZFW before the check-in opens and loading begins) in accordance with airline policy. 
• Communicating with departments (Operations Control Center, Dispatch and Ground Operations) in case they need anything done. 
• Dispatching the aircraft (working the flight line to meet the needs of the aircraft, vendors and flight crew) in order to make sure the aircraft has what it needs. 
• Logging and reporting the activities of 8 hours shifts with each aircraft on the ground along with various other reports (the departure message (all the essential information that occurred at the uplift), post flight reports (the minute by minute operation of the aircraft) and the cargo load (a accountancy of what actually was loaded on the aircraft)) in accordance with airline policy. 
• Other duties as assigned to assist North American Airlines in achieving its operational goals and objectives.

III.  QUALIFICATIONS

The qualifications listed below represent the credentials necessary to perform the essential duties of this position. A.  Education and/or Experience

For the Ground Service Representative job, a high school diploma (or its equivalent) and one to two years experience are required.  Airline experience is preferred.

B. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

• Must understand loadmaster, GSC and CRO. 
• Must have a professional understanding of aircraft loading and of aircraft Weight and Balance.
• A working knowledge of computers and customer service is important.
• Able to identify problems and their sources.  While not necessarily accountable for the solutions, an individual must be able to identify potential resources to help in the decision-making process for a particular problem. 
• Must have a strong command of reasoned, measured decision-making based upon analyzing the pros and cons of each potential decision to be made. 
• Must have an interest and ability in serving others as one of the primary functions of one’s job.
• Strong communication skills: must be comfortable engaging in a variety of different communicative modes (verbal, non-verbal, and written).  In addition, the ability to listen actively is important for this job as well.
• The ability to process information from a variety of sources and to articulate information in a meaningful way to one’s co-workers or supervisors is critical to this position.
• The ability to receive direct or indirect instruction and act upon such instruction to accomplish a given task or duty.  In the event of unclear instruction, must have the ability to clearly ask for further information at one’s own discretion to gain clarity around tasks.
• Must have the ability to take initiative on a given task or project and persist with the project to its completion. 
• Must possess an ability to manage one’s own time, to ensure that the work that needs to be accomplished in a given time frame is, in fact, accomplished.  The ability to prioritize the work provided by others in terms of importance is imperative to this position.
• Must have a strong understand of clerical and administrative principles, procedures, and systems so as to complete one’s work with the best available resources, strategies, and plan.
• When necessary, the ability to understand and communicate within a technical or specialized subject matter, particularly as it pertains to aviation and the aviation industry.

C. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

A valid & clean driver’s license and a valid passport are required. A DOT 382 certification is preferred.

IV. WORKING CONDITIONS

A.  Travel Requirements

For full-time employees, travel takes up 45% of one’s time.  For part-time employees, it takes up 95% of one’s time.  Must be able to travel and remain with an aircraft worldwide for extended periods of time. Must be available to work when requested and be able to get to JFK Airport within an hour.

B.  Physical Demands

The job has intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as walking, standing, stooping, climbing, lifting material or equipment, some of which may be heavy or awkward.

C.  Work Environment

The work environment is typically comfortable with regular exposure to factors causing moderate physical discomfort such as dust or fumes.  There is occasional exposure to hazards or risk of injury which are unpredictable or uncertain. 

A Ground Service Representative is under constant pressure to meet tight deadlines, demanding quotas and must regularly deal with unpleasant situations.
