I. SUMMARY
 
The Technical Writer is responsible for writing a variety of technical manuals, guides, bulletins and/or information notices for use throughout the company. 
 
II. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
  • Coordinating document content organization, and formatting/presentation with document owners in order to ensure consistency. 
  • Creating document content using standard company procedures in order to ensure that content is clear, concise, professional and current within regulatory compliance and house style guidelines.
  • Performing cross-checks of procedural content across company manuals and interfaces, in order to ensure consistency of procedures and best practices.
  • Proofreading, editing and commenting on revision drafts that are submitted by employees of other departments.
  • Ensuring accurate and correct document index items, i.e., Table of Contents, List of Effective Pages, Indexes, Contents, Links, Cross-References.
  • Coordinating with 3rd party document creation and document reproduction vendors to ensure correct content creation and accurate and adequate reproduction of content.
  • Assisting in the distribution and auditing of manual content throughout company-held manuals, as well as outside vendors in accordance with company policy.
  • Other duties as assigned to assist North American Airlines in achieving its operational goals and objectives.
 
III. QUALIFICATIONS
 
The qualifications listed below represent the credentials necessary to perform the essential duties of this position. A. Education and/or Experience
 
For the Technical Writer job, an Associate’s Degree (or other equivalent certification/training program) and a minimum of one year technical writing experience is required. Work experience in aviation Flight Operations or Maintenance Operations greatly preferred, but not exclusively necessary.
 
 
B. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
 
  • Must have proficiency in Adobe FrameMaker, Windows platform.
  • Must have experience in writing, reviewing, proofreading.
  • Must have advanced knowledge of publishing software, document formatting, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Must be able to accurately articulate technical materials in a clear and concise manner for all North American Airlines manuals.
  • Strong working knowledge of the subject matter or discipline in which one finds themself engaged on a daily basis. Becoming fully aware and informed of current trends, developments, and changes in the sub-industry is critical.
  • Superior communication skills: must be comfortable with engaging in a variety of different communicative modes (verbal, non-verbal, and written) and being attuned to others through strong active listening skills.
  • Must possess a strong ability to manage one’s own time, as well as others’ time, to ensure that the work that needs to be accomplished in a given time frame is, in fact accomplished. Hand-in-hand with this ability is the ability to prioritize tasks when given clearly defined goals and objectives.
  • Must have the ability to take initiative on a given task or project and persist with the project to its completion. 
  • Must possess the ability to understand and communicate within a technical or specialized subject matter, particularly as it pertains to aviation and the aviation industry.
  • The ability to receive direct or indirect instruction and act upon such instruction to accomplish a given task or duty. In the event of unclear instruction, must have the ability to clearly ask for further information at their own discretion to gain clarity around tasks.
  • Must have an ability to self-monitor one’s progress and abilities, so as to determine areas for potential development and growth within the company.

IV. WORKING CONDITIONS
 
A. Travel Requirements
 
No travel is required for this job.
 
B. Physical Demands
 
Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position and there is frequent opportunity to move about. On rare occasions there may be a need to move or lift articles weighing up to 50 pounds.
