I. SUMMARY
The Pilot Instructor is responsible for participating in the developing, coordinating, and administering of the Pilot Training Program for North American Airlines to ensure that all crewmembers maintain the high standards of proficiency and performance required by North American Airlines and the FAA.
II. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conducts new hire and recurrent ground and/or simulator training as assigned for flight crewmembers, as well as ground staff (dispatchers, mechanics, and Ground Service Representatives), in all aspects of aircraft and airline operations to assure safe, standard, and efficient operations in both normal and emergency situations.
- Observes and critiques flight crew members and ground staff to maintain a high standard of proficiency for North American Airlines personnel.
- Assists in researching and composing lectures and presentations to provide up-to-date training materials for North American Airlines.
- Assists in the preparation and revision of training courseware in conjunction with, and under the direction of the Director of Training and Standards, Sr. Director of Flight Operations, System Chief Pilot, Manager of Ground Training, and company-contracted vendors to ensure current classroom materials for North American Airlines are being properly utilized.
- Attends symposiums, courses, meetings, sessions, and workshops as assigned to enhance knowledge of current developments in Airline Operations, Regulations, Safety, Security, and accepted good practices.
- Ensures proper and adequate classroom supplies are stocked and available prior to the commencement of any training activity.
- Assures accurate and orderly records are maintained to ensure compliance with Federal Aviation Regulations and company Operation Specifications, and crewmember qualifications comply with the parameters prescribed by the Approved Training Manual.
- Establishes and monitors daily communications between Flight Crewmembers, Training Department Management, and other operating employees through personal contact, email, and/or voicemail.
- Acts as liaison and monitors daily communications between Flight Crewmembers, Dispatch, Operations, Scheduling, and Training.
- Conducts web-enabled training as developed and needed to reach employees who need assistance and are remote from headquarters.
- Maintains a polite and professional decorum at all times while representing North American Airlines.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Training and Standards.
III. QUALIFICATIONS

A. Education and/or Experience
For the Pilot Instructor position, a Bachelor’s Degree (or its equivalent) and three to five years experience in turbo-propeller or turbojet powered aircraft is required. In the absence of a degree, equivalent experience will be considered. Experience concerning crewmember duties and positions and experience with North American Airlines is strongly preferred.
B. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- A thorough knowledge of Crewmember duties and responsibilities, Federal Aviation Regulations, navigation, aircraft systems, etc. is required for this position. Additionally, a background in training or education is preferred.
- Strong communication skills are required. Candidates must be comfortable with engaging in a variety of different communicative modes (verbal, non-verbal, and written) and being attuned to others through strong active listening skills.
- Must possess a strong ability to manage one’s own time, as well as others’ time, to ensure that training scenarios are completed within the limits of availability of simulators and aircraft. Hand-in-hand with this ability is the ability to prioritize tasks when given clearly defined goals and objectives.
- An individual in this capacity must have strong leadership skills, ensuring that he or she uses appropriate methods of leadership, influence, facilitation, and persuasion, to guide, manage, and develop the skills and abilities of students.
- Individuals in this capacity must be able to instruct others, imparting knowledge and understanding to develop others within their scope of supervision.
- An individual working in an instructional and/or specialist capacity must be able to engage individuals using multiple learning styles (including Web-based formats) in order to transmit information and develop those whom they are instructing or observing.
- Individuals must be able to identify technical problems, their sources, and their potential solutions while continuing to successfully conduct day-to day operations without interruption.
- Individuals must have a strong command of reasoned, measured decision-making based upon analyzing the pros and cons of each potential decision to be made.
- Individuals need a working knowledge of standard and advanced business principles and procedures in order to remain mindful of budgetary considerations; moreover, the ability to incorporate them into one’s business unit or division to achieve measurable, sustainable results.
- Must have the ability to take initiative on a given task or project and persist with the project to its completion.
- When necessary, the ability to understand and communicate within a technical or specialized subject-matter, particularly as it pertains to modern communications and training methods in the aviation industry.
C. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Airline Transport Pilot Certificate is required. B757/767 type rating preferred.
Certified Fight Instructor Certificate is required. Ground Instructor Certificate preferred but not required.
IV. WORKING CONDITIONS
A. Travel Requirements
Travel is occasionally required to accomplish training in facilities contracted by vendors to North American Airlines.
B. Physical Demands
The job has intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as walking, standing, stooping, climbing, lifting materials or equipment, some of which may be heavy or awkward.

C. Work Environment
Normally located in a comfortable indoor area, conditions could produce mild discomfort on occasion. (Onsite Training and Observations may include cockpit and cabin access onboard NAA Aircraft.)
